Castro
The Castro, formerly known as Eureka Valley, lies right in the center of the city, surrounded by some other great neighborhoods like the Mission District, Noe Valley, Twin Peaks, Lower Haight, and Cole Valley. This district’s central location attracts a wide range of patrons, and here you will find brightly colored rainbow banners hanging from lamp posts, inviting any and all visitors to the community. It’s a historic center for the LGBTQ community and this vibrant neighborhood is filled with artists, young families, and tech workers. Some popular bars, restaurants, boutiques, and even nightclubs are part of the Castro District. Many are familiar with the political activist Harvey Milk and the strides he made for the community in the 60’s and 70’s when San Francisco was at the center of the gay pride movement, but you may not know that his former headquarters were located at 575 Castro St. Vintage trolleys pass through this district from Fisherman’s Wharf. Twin Peaks Tavern is a historic landmark, and the bar is most notable for being the first gay gathering place to have large clear glass windows. This district is named after The Castro Theatre, which hosts repertory movies, film festivals, and special events with a gay and multicultural focus. My personal favorite is when they host the San Francisco International Film Festival.
