Sunset

Some refer to the Sunset District as the Avenues due to its streets being laid out in a grid of consecutively numbered avenues from the low (Inner Sunset) to the high (Outer Sunset) ending at the Great Highway, which is a road bordering the Pacific Ocean and not actually a highway. If you are easily lost when navigating, this district is perfect for you, as the streets from North to South are almost all alphabetical as well. The name Sunset does embody a lot of this district’s beauty: people will gather at Ocean Beach to enjoy the sunrise and sunset, set bonfires when allowed by the parks department, and surf all day long. You can also cruise over to Golden Gate Park, the nation’s largest urban park with over 1,000 acres of land. If visiting the park, it’s best to do so in parts so as not to be overwhelmed by its sheer size and all it has to offer. There you will find trails, grassy meadows, secluded lakes, dog parks, cultivated gardens like the Conservatory of Flowers or Botanical Gardens, a brand new Ferris wheel with gondolas, and some fine museums like the de Young Museum or the Academy of Sciences. Some large music festivals also take place at the park, like the “Hardly Strictly” bluegrass festival and “Outside Lands.” If you want to live in a relatively quieter district with close proximity to many local Asian markets as well as the ocean, then the Sunset might be perfect for you.
